Networking is key I think.
Here are some further ideas that I can think of off the top of my head.
- MySpace
- Setting up an Event of some kind related to the content of your magazine.
- Writing an article or two for a similarly-themed magazine (often in lieu of payment, the publishers will place some kind of promotional blurb about your venture within their own magazine)
- Start up a blog
- Build a cheap and manageable website
- Organise a charity fund-raising event or campaign making sure that your magazine is stongly linked to all promotional material
- Set up a stand at related conventions, shows or other related events.
Can anyone else think of any ideas?
Digital newsletters have been the most effective for us. We use Constant Contact. Facebook is kind of blah....but Twitter takes too much work to get followers in my opinion. Google Adwords has worked out nicely as well.
Twitter is a rockstar, but you have to know how to use it. There are tools you can utilize to make it easier to manage your Facebook and Twitter accounts:
Twollow (auto follow keywords on Twitter): http://twollow.com/
Ping.fm (update all your social media at once): http://ping.fm/
Tweetlater (now called SocialOomph,--schedule tweets and auto follow people; you follow them, they usually follow you back): http://www.socialoomph.com/
TweetDeck (put on your desktop and keep in touch with what's happening): http://tweetdeck.com/
These are just a few great pieces to help you get started. Remember to have fun with it ;)

I think that at least in my case Twitter is extremely overrated!? It just doesn't work!!!
I would like to know more about how you can work in an efficient way with Facebook and MySpace.
I never managed to get Google Adwords going. Got loads of clicks to my website, but no sales or any kind of response. And I had great ads that Google helped me with.
