WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Hello everyone! This is my first post and I really love the info I am getting from the forum.

I am working on a local magazine that focusing on the minority community. I have a friend who owns a mailing center. This is also where my business mail goes to. I don't have a brick and mortar business. I work out of my home.

I am planning to have my 10,000 copies of the magazine delivered to my friend's mailing center. In the magazine it will have an ad for her mailing center that mentions - they are the official distributor of the magazine and if you need copies sent to your locatiion please call the mailing center. She will then ship them out. They will be store and shipped from this location. We hope this will also get other small publications coming to her for distribution so she can make money that way.

The mailing center would be:
-- a pick up place for the 2 drivers
-- a pick up place for anyone wanting copies in their business
-- the place that ships out copies to different businesses that we ask her to send to or if they call and request
-- the storage place for all the magazines

Besides and ad in each issue for the mailing center, and paying for the postage on all the shipping, how else should she be compensated? Is this a good way to get the product out?

Thanks!

I would love to have a friend with a mailing center. That sounds wonderful! :) You're paying for postage, do you know what her fees on top of that usually are? I'd say take her out for a fancy dinner or something ;) And of course keep spreading the word for her.
I agree with Kaolin - as long as your friend isn't losing money and she is getting biz from it in the end I would say that its working just fine - keep an open dialogue about everything and you should be good to go.
Sounds great to me. The ad should work wonders, especially if it's an on-going placement in your magazine. I'd say see how it goes for a little while. Then, if the figures appear a bit whop-sided and you feel she needs to be compesated more, then the two of you can come up with other ideas to try to even the score a bit. It's great having friends helping each other thrive with their respective businesses! That's absolutely fantastic!
Sounds like you have more than just this location to get your magazine. You have 2 drivers so they must be taking your magazine elsewhere and leaving it, right? If so then it does sound like you're covering your distribution basis.

Free advertising is a good plug for your friend's mailing center. Will they get business from the ads, though? I'm drawing a blank as to how I, a regular Joe, would use a mailing center. Perhaps that's just me and my lack of understanding.

You may want to include their name and business in any marketing or promotional campaigns you do. "Donna's Magazine and So-and-So Mailing Center presents...." or whatever. Include their logo or mention them in any advertising you perform.

Whatever you do make sure you get it in writing. Get a contract in place. Saves a lot of heartache down the road. Even between friends it's a smart idea to always have a contract.

I like the above suggestions of a nice dinner, etc... Always do nice things like that for your partners and clients.
