I'm definitely drawn to the typography on a magazine's cover. Everything from the Logo down to the font-face used in the bar-code. One of my favorite magazines, Blueprint (an offshoot of Martha Stewart), had a brilliant logo. Sadly, Blueprint was axed by Martha Stewart & Co. Before I degress any further, I'd love to see what other readers look for in a cover.
I believe the cover should draw you into the magazine but the content is equally important. If you cant get readers into your magazine then how will it be cost effective for your advertisors. No ads for most no magazine. So in conclusion they all work hand in hand.
I just spent an hour in Barnes & Noble looking through the magazine rack. There is no way that you can see past the cover. In that environment, you better make something jump off that cover to stand out from the hundreds of other magazines on the rack.
I agree. Do everything right, but for goodness sake make sure you do proper research on the cover and don't pick a cover because your business associates and friends said they like it.
If you are selling a magazine on the newsstand - then you bet people judge a magazine by its cover. How else will you catch the potential buye's eye in an otherwhise crowded field?

One thing that I have began to pay attention to only after I started working on a magazine is our memory recognition when it comes to pictures. In other words, seeing a picture of someone with both arms raised in the air with both hands flashing a peace sign, subconsciously we often associate that picture with lies and deceit because Richard Nixon has the same pose in a popular photograph of him. On the other hand, if we see someone sitting down with one of their fists under their chin, then we could associate that pose with strength and introspection thanks to Rodan's sculpture of "The Thinker".
Thye cover is the most important part of any magazine.

Striking photography, recognisable brand, strong headlines, and freebies are what attracts comsumers to a magazine, if your mag has none of these, you'd better do something about it!
I'm personally drawn to an artsy cover that isn't completely covered over with text. Clean, simple, intriguing. That's what we try to produce at GUD Magazine. I'm also a big fan of the Weird Tales covers, though they do put more words on the front than I care for. I understand folks are drawn to "names", and it's good marketing on their part, but I still don't like it. :)
I'd disagree re: "most" important, unless everything about a magazine is the "most" important--because you're judged by whatever is least. :)

Boobs... No, but really, a cover's important. This was Beatdom's first cover:

Good thought, sharing cover. That's a point for discussion. :)

We buck the trend of putting author names/content on the front. That loses us some interest off the bat, but gains us appreciation in the long run. Probably not worth it in terms of "marketing", but worth it to us in terms of product. There is a hint as to what's inside, but it's very underplayed (line running above the title). Cover is our only color art, so we try to really make it snap, though we don't force color if something else really grabs (i.e. Issue 0's essentially monochrome green).

Readers do want to know what's inside, and they want to know quickly and simply. :) If we can get their curiousity just for a moment, they'll open us up and, with nary an ad inside, they'll be on content immediately, and hopefully pulled through it and awed by it as we are. :)
Covers are so important, especially at the beginning stages of branding, because each cover needs to sum up what your magazine is about. Until your name is strong you can't vary too far from it. Example: We had a great actor pitched to us, but because we aren't a house hold name and our demo is women 17 to 34, we decided against it. Instead put a less known actress on the cover, but she represented everything we are about: down-to-earth beauty, fashion, heart and smarts.

This is our most recent cover.
