Magazine Publishing | SAM - Starting a Magazine

WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Hi, I am a high school student and have started a club where we try to donate money to poor children (I won't go into the details). One way I wanted to raise funds was to compile student art: photography, drawings, literature..., into a magazine. I read some articles and it seems like a complicated process. Can anyone help me. I do NOT want to start a huge magazine business. All I need is cheap ways I can make the mag and somewhere I can print it. All people that are working on this are wolunteers so there's no salary or hiring. Distributing we depend on the club. Advirtisments are not necessary.

Edouard,
Does your school have a newspaper that would accept a special section or to perhaps become a delivery vehicle for your magazine? Unless the goal is the magazine presentation, perhaps there's another medium for your group member art that would be equally rewarding without the budget required for a formal print magazine. Raising funds for poor children sounds like a great cause that would have some donation value if you do create a magazine or a show. Sponsorships and advertising can also be a great source for funding if you've developed your formal cause and have some faculty or community support. Good luck!
thanks for the tip. But I still want to try to form a small magazine. I had something really simple in my head. Design and create the magazine on a cheap software like Word, pages, or istudio. Then I just need someplace to print it into average quality. The distribution i would figure out myself. Do you know anyplace i can send my magazine design and they would print it and send the copies to my door? About the school paper, my school's paper is free so the only use would be for it to advirtise my magazine.

What kind of price range are you looking for in printing?

Depending on the size of the magazine, you could try OfficeMax. Their Impress Department can handle small jobs.

Another source can be found here: http://www.48hourprint.com/magazine-printing.html

Look for anywhere that says they print magazines or brochures.
Edouard,

If you are looking for something cheap, simple and fast, then check out MagCloud (http://www.magcloud.com/), which is a print-on-demand magazine service offered by HP. You can create your magazine in Word or Publisher, save it in PDF, then upload it there. You can do full color magazine with MagCloud and they provide your magazine proflle (*web space"), your shopping cart, they print and ship your magazine either to your subscribers and allow single-copy purchases. Because it is a print-on-demand service, you don't pay a thing until its time to order a 'physical copy' of the magazine. Printing costs come out of the price of the magazine and whatever you add on to that price is your profit. MagCloud collects the monies for you and sends the profits to your PayPal acocunt once a month I think. Check it out!
