WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Magazine Startup - Advertising sales for 1st issue - Advertising Pre-Sales

I am in the process of starting up a magazine and will be launching the first issue in January of 2012.

I had produced one print issue in September of 2009; http://issuu.com/ieautomag/docs/layout

I had a bit of a problem selling advertising space in a magazine that had yet to be printed so I ended up primarilty funding about 76% of the magazine myself and after printing my first issue the economy took a crap and I put the magazine on the back burner.

Now I am looking to startup the magazine again and would like osme advice on getting ad sales prior to the magazine being printed.

One thing I have that is a benefit is a printed copy of my original issue to use in my printed media kit.

I have spent money and have been very professional in making sure that I have all the appropriate sales tools I need; media kit, insertion orders, advertising contracts.

When approaching a business to advertise in my magazine that is coming in January of 2012, how do I get them to sign up and give me money?

I want this re-launch of the magazine to be a success and would appreciate any advice that is available.

Well, I would say that you need to build a rapport with small business owners. I'm assuming that you're focusing on potential advertisers in your area. Well in my strategic plan, I have planned to meet small business owners where they gather, in networking circles. I would say get seen by being at all of the networking meet-ups you can go to, build a rapport with individuals and then work on the relationship. They have to like and trust you and you have to convince them that their investment will produce results and believe me that they will be looking at their bottom line for the time their ad appears in your publication and rest assured they will be comparing their numbers from the same time the previous year looking for a bump.  So I say got to all the networking circles and once you've scoped out the scene and picked your targets, spend a little money with them and make it known if they don't see you spending with them (in a subtle way) that you are supporting them too.  My two cents
Chris, I just checked out your mag on Issu. I see you have lots of car related advertisers like body shops and car mechanics. I would also say mix it up with more high end advertisers as well. I don't know your demo. but I'm sure it includes car enthusiasts and weekend driving gentleman classic car owners. These people spend a lot of money restoring some of these cars. Think about auctions, websites, country clubs, cigar shops, higher end local liquor stores, car clubs, car lots, etc. Don't forget to sell them on supporting local. The support local is now a part of the national mood with everyone's anger directed towards large corporations that rarely give back to the community.
Thanks for the input MR, always appreciated. I have had the magazine on hold due to the economy, but have been working diligently with the local community to build up awareness. I hope to be up and running again by February.
