WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

I'm going to launch my magazine as an online magazine first and I would love help and input on how to do that. I'm interested in any pointers anyone has along with ideas on how to increase traffic to the magazine's site and how to get advertisers on the site.

http://projectwonderful.com/ is a great way to get ads on any site (and using them is a little more personal than google ads, so you get eyeballs from the folks who are bidding ads for your site, often).

Starting a magazine online--really depends on what you're looking to produce. Do you have a mission statement? :)

Thanks for the advice and I'm looking to produce an online magazine now and then publish a print magazine once I get enough publicity and advertisers. I have a mission statement and I'm working on finishing the rest of my business plan.

The tried-and-true way of turning sweat into visitors is spending a lot of time on the various social networks, making non-spammish comments relevant to whatever demographic you're hitting and just leaving the url to the mag in your profile and/or signature. Takes a _lot_ of time, though.

What is your mission statement? :) We had one, but it fell by the wayside (we had a manifesto as well, but that wasn't quite right either). But it's something to the effect of: "publishing quality fictio, poetry, and art, literary and genre, that's difficult to pigeonhole as such; introducing our readers to material outside of their standard reading ruts and opening their minds to it". Something. Need to finish making coffee...

great link - thanks Kaolin
I used MySpace and various other social networking spots to boost my Google ranking and website visits. We sell about a thousand issues by download, and around two hundred for print copies. So I definitely advise online magazines... But with a print alternative.

My website is www.beatdom.com if you want to take a look, and feel free to send an e-mail.
I actually create online magazines for people and design websites. Reply back I would like to help you...
Do you have samples of your work? Didn't see any listed in your profile. Come on, this is marketing ;) Or maybe I looked in the wrong place?

Good luck,

Damion.
I just launched my magazine last week, but I did research for the past year and half and I had the opportunity to work in publishing (the business side) for 5 years. It wasn't planned, but hey when life gives you lemons you make some good ole' sweet southern lemonade. WIth that being said:

1.) Make sure you have a great easy to use CMS (Content Management System) I personally prefer to use wordpress because its easier for ME to use and they have a plethora of plugins to use.
2.) Make sure you researched the audience that you are trying to reach. Understand people who are going to be reading your magazine are already online. Therefore, make sure you utilize and intergrate all 3 of the major social networking sites: Twitter, facebook, and myspace (YES it sill has a major following!). The reason why I say all three is because everybody is not on all 3. Some folks REALLY don not like or get twitter, some people think facebook is wack, and others think myspace is ancient
3) Tag your postings. That has really helped me, big time!
4.) Use google analytics! Its great for beginners and those who aren't used to analyzing data for marketing reports.
5.) Create relationships with other folks that own online magazine and bloggers. Link love is the best love next to safe sex ;)
6.) Don't rush into print. WIth the way things are going in the print industry you might want to steer away from that...Paper cost are no joke..and printing a magzine takes time and LOTS and LOTS of money. Maybe look into print special editions or guides quarterly or twice a year.
7.) Really utilize emai marketing have an accompanying newsletter to go with your site. Its has helped me because e-mail addresses is the golden egg in this game.

Disclaimer: Those are just my opinions and views. Plus I know what is working for me! Good Luck!
I am sure this goes without saying but make sure your demographic that you are targeting want to read your content online.

Print is suffering but specialist print titles about money or hobbies are thriving just fine. If your demographic want to read online, then you can definitely launch knowing that there are readers for sure.

It may help us to help you if you highlight what your mag is about (no one will steal it trust me - stealing a magazine idea is more work than stealing a car, I'm sure!).
There are a few more things you can do to increase your presence

- Google offers a keyword tool as part of it's adwords service
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
With some time, you can generate keywords and phrases that speak to your content and audience and help your search standing rise.

- If you do use a CMS based route, like word press - be sure to get your RSS feed set up. Also set up an email feed (like feedburner) and add that ability for people to sign up for the feed to your site. You can see an execution of this on our site

It sounds like you already have started on the right track with a business plan and mission statement. As far as increasing traffic, one of, if not the most important is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you are using a CMS like Wordpress it creates SEO friendly content. If you want to know more about SEO and how to select keywords you can check out What is SEO? or How to Pick Keywords for SEO. Increasing your search engine presence is one the most important things you can do to increase traffic to your site.
