WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Possibly challenging a pre-existing magazine / marketing

So, I've decided (officially) to launch a magazine in my community in the Summer of 2010. My dilemma: I don't want to "step on the toes" of the community magazine that has already been so prominent in our community for decades. In my honest opinion, the magazine that already exists is behind in times. I love and respect what it has done for the AfricanAmerican community by and large, but community is growing, advancing, and (I feel) is thirsty for more than a magazine full of pictures and brief descriptions. I also feel that our community needs to see how much we have allowed ourselves to diversify over the years and embrace that concept for future generations. We are all part of a melting pot of cultures and should take any opportunity available to learn from one another. This is the mission of my magazine. . .so how do I market it successfully? How do I take this concept and sell it to those who are so used to the old style?

You must live where I live! I have the same issue. I don't want it to be like a take over or like I am stepping on toes, but so many people complain about it and there is a need. Oh we have to talk! Email me at soulpitt@gmail.com

Haha, although we don't live in the same area, but I do believe we have the same issue here! Definitely causes a bit of a hiccup, in my opinion, and even a second thought every now and then. I will email you shortly. Hopefully we can figure this out together. I'd love to find a way for both of the magazines in our respective communities to feed off each other or somehow exist together in peace!
I think you do just what you stated here. You've pretty much laid out your mission statement. Just don't make it sound like an attack/disparaging of the other magazine.

Competition can cause growth and inspire creativity. Perhaps you and the other magazine can have a meeting of the minds down the road and join forces on special projects in your community, etc... There is such a thing as friendly rivalry.
