WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

For small circulations, is selling ad space using direct marketing generally effective?

I'm thinking of a direct mail package or email letter to introduce prospective advertisers to an online periodical, its audience, circulation, readers' buying power, etc.

Especially for small circulations, say <10,000 direct marketing seems like the way to go compared to a salesperson for selling low-cost ad space. Any thoughts?

Who should the direct mail piece be sent to -- Sales/Adv. Dir? Marketing Dir? Outside agency?

Any advice appreciated!

I would say direct mail most likely will not work. I guess if you send out enough direct mailer you may gain a few advertisers but from what I've experienced it won't happen. We very rarely get some call us to advertise. 99% of the time we have to call someone. IF we send out magazines and media kits to companies we never get a reply.

There are a few reasons most likely for this.

-Big companies have media buyers so sending media kits to big companies won't work.
-Small businesses just don't take initiative to advertise most of the time. Even if you call and they say they want to you have to keep on them or they forget. Most will not get around to advertising if they get something direct mailed to them

Direct mail is costly and response rates are typically low 1-2%. I don't think it will be effective at all. I would use a sales person or use both. I would not just use direct mail

No direct marketing, no TV, no newspaper. The only other way you should be participating in other mediums is for straight trade. You shouldn't have to pay to be any other medium because your magazine is just as effective and they will want to trade. Way more effective is a email newsletter, but do it professional.

Use http://www.constantcontact.com, it's $15 a month and I've made thousands off of it by following up on who we sent them to. It allows you to see who on your email list opened the newsletter, when, and how many times. Our newsletter goes out to around 400 decision makers in the area.

You are selling advertising for a website! Anything that is read online is a website. Something that can give you a paper cut...is a magazine. You are asking sales questions on a print magazine advertising site. You are at the wrong site! You need to go to an online marketing site.

Who should the direct mail piece be sent to -- Sales/Adv. Dir? Marketing Dir? Outside agency?

I never send out a thing without first knowing that it is something the company wants to do....and if they want to do it...I send a faxed inserion order to book the ad. For craps and giggles...I will answer your question this way. Who is the final decision maker amongst Sales/adv dir, Maketing dir, or an agency? Answer? None of those. The final decision maker will always be the President or owner of the company. Work only with final decision makers.

Circulation is irrelevant. If you are sending a magazine that will be read every day by the richest 30 people in the world....how much is that worth? Your circulation may only be 30 but you could charge $100,000 a day?!! Only marketing sprogs and ad agencies sell based upon bogus circulation waste. Describe your audience as being the richest in the world and the term circulation will never come up.
