What kind of training? Meaning?

Here's your guideline:

Never work with ad agencies.

Only talk to decision makers of the companies. The President and owner are ALWAYS the final decision makers of ANY company. They are the Royal Flush...so why deal with a pair of 2's?

Ask them if this is something they want to do based on your great audience, angles, concept or distribution, and pricing. If not....hang up and call the next company.

Send out NOTHING. Never send a media kit. If they need an email with the information for their records...fine. Though it will be accompanied with a faxed insertion order. Send NOTHING...unless they tell you they want to do it. If they don't like your audience, concept, or pricing...why send them anything?

If its something a decision maker wants to do...they will do it. If they have to talk to someone else...then they are not the final decision maker. Only deal with final decision makers.

Have your new employee take out a sheet of paper. Write down 10 industries that would like to be in your magazine. Then write down 20 companies within each of those industries. That's 200 companies. Call only the decision makers and ask if they want to be in your publication now. Not tomorrow....not call me back. NOW.

NEVER EVER leave a voice mail. Ad sales are based on urgency, surprise, and enthusiasm. By leaving voice mails....you lose all of those.

I have sold over $50 million dollars worth of print adverstising without sending out a single media kit and physical publication. The decision makers know what a magazine is. Describe it and ask for the order NOW. If they want to do it.....fax over the insertion order and get it signed today.

That is the basics of a training program. Researching companies and angle formation never stops.

If a rep gives you crap....fire them. Its a sign of things to come.
