Distribution of free publications
My biggest cost as a publisher of a free monthly publication is the distribution of it. What are the best ways of distributing free publications economically or free of charge?

Hi! Our company is also in the process of putting up a magazine which would be on a free subscription basis so I would also like to know what factors and processes should be considered in distributing free publications (e.i. what resources do we need in terms of manpower and costs). Can anyone give us light on this matter please? Thanks mucho!

When I first started publishing a free magazine, I did the all of the graphics, some of the writing, all of the sales and all of the distribution. It makes for one tired publisher not to mention hard on the transmission of your car or truck. Unfortunately, if you don't do some it yourself, you are risking having someone else do a lame job of it (unless you are paying them well to do it...and they still may do a lame job of it!).
Depending on the frequency of your publication and the geographic range of distrbution, you may have to use a combination of yourself and some "freelance" distributors. I used a couple of private distributors that the "big" magazine in the area was using.
Could be a good part-time job for college kids, high school kids (that are responsible), family members etc. Get creative in your thinking.

Its very simple. All you do is offer the item at participating advertisers. We publish a community magazine in a small town of 12,000. The magazine is available at 80 different retailers in town. That's right,..we have 80 advertisers per month. It's easy as long as you have a saleable product.
