WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Does anyone know what these national magazine pay for postage? The reason I ask is because i know a huge chunk of their profit comes from subscriptions. But a subscription only costs $12/$18 a year. These means they must get postage for tenor twenty cents each. (Maxim, Cosmo, etc)

Does anyone know?

Brad,
Magazine postage is very complicated. Magazines can pay less postage than you would for a similar size and weight item in three ways. First they do what is called "work sharing". This means that they sort the mail to make it easier for the post office to deliver. Second, they bring the mail to post offices closer to the subscriber. This is called drop shipping. Both of these options are available to amny bulk mailers if the volume makes it cost effective.

The last thing is that they apply for periodicals privleges. This combined with the work sharing (which must be done to get the rate) will give them a preferred rate. See my article on periodicals postage under distribution,
