WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Legal Questions

I am working on a start up magazine. My background is accounting/business so I am fairly comfortable with the business aspect of my new "project". I am unsure about the legal aspect and I could use some advice. What should I be considering? Are there fairly standard advertising agreements? If you photograph private property for your magazine (like a vacation home) do you have to obtain a release from the property owner? Are there samples of such agreements/releases on-line? Have you read "Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine"
by Cheryl Woodard? It's a fabulous book and will answer these questions in detail, plus a whole lot more.

Do you compile the magazine then before the launch copyright the entire magazine? I am very copyright unsavy and worry that I could make some mistakes that I could live to regret. I am not in the position to hire a copyright attorney, is this a process that can be done online or via the postal service?

Go to the USPSTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) website. It is very comprehensive. Also, you might want to get a NOLO legal book on the subject.
