Often you can contact the media rep for the company and explain you'd like to feature their product in your magazine, and could they email you a high-res image of the product to use. Most of the time, they will be all too happy to do that, and simply ask that you send them a tear sheet when it publishes. Legally, they just gave you permission to use that photo. Keep the email to CYA.
If you want to do the photo shoot yourself, you need to arrange some sort of loaner program with the store/organization. Some places would loan on my word, but most places require a cc number in case the item is damaged. Ask the store manager only...anyone below that level rarely has that authority. Worst case scenario, you can buy the item, shoot it, and take it back. Legally, I have no idea what you'd have to worry about here.
