I'm interested in software that handles calculations for postage and also produces the file I would send my printer for subscriber data for mailing. Is this part of standard subscription management software and can anyone recommend some options or further reading about this aspect and any other options for mailing / distribution for a paid subscriptions publication?

Thank you!

The process you are speaking about is actually based on the subscriber file to begin with. The address file is sorted based on the class of postage you want to use and are eligible . Once you establish that you are paying first class mail, standard mail or periodical rates, the program sorts the subscriber addresses accordingly. Based on that sort, it will produce mail media (labels or an ink jet file, pallet flags, sack labels and postal reports. This same software can produce your postage payment report. One company that has this software is Group 1 (owned by) Pitney Bowes. Normally publishers use fullfilment houses to maintain their files and that company does this for you using Group 1 or another brand. I am not sure how cost effective it would be to purchase this yourself.

You can also maintain your own file on most name and address software and use your printer's services. They can convert the list and calculate postage.

Lastly, the USPS has a web site where you can calculate postage http://dbcalc.usps.gov/ieframe.htm This is menu driven and you will have to know how your mail is sorted in order to calculate the postage. This is normally used to estimate postage.

As you can see there is no easy answer and a lot depends on what you are currently doing and iof you can build on that information.
