WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and will probably bugging you for some time. We are in the middle of turning our website into a print magazine. We are getting ready to print a prototype for testing and shopping to potential advertisers and investors. I've had some quotes from the usual round of printers based on various size runs, but I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on...
1. how many will we really need to print out.
2. the economics of finding a print on demand outfit to do the job. My idea to do a really short run and just order more as needed.
3. What POD outfits out there can handle a glossy perfect bound prototype that looks like a real magazine?

Printing a full-blown prototype us usually not needed. There are three separate audiences you need to be communicating with: readers, advertisers, investors. Different preview pieces are required for each group. For readers, you need something that "typical" readers can react to in a focus group. The advertisers need a piece that will highlight the benefits from advertising in your publication. The investor piece must convince that audience that you are a solid investment and explain how they'll get their money back.
