WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

I'm desirous of a new ad layout/pagination software to better plan the ad positioning for my company's magazine. It is a small publication of less than 10,000 circ. so the high end systems are too much money and more extensive than we would use. We have been using MagForce (by Managing Editor Inc.) for many many years, but is very obsolete. Does anyone know of anything that fits a small business and runs on Mac OS X?

thanks
Blaine

Hmm... I just use templates I built in Quark for all of my page mapping. Once you have it set up, its easy to throw everything together very quickly.

I've seen it done that way and also via Excel. It may come to that. The nice thing about MagForce is that I link all the files, open up my issue template, then open the magForce file and it creates a new document from my template with all the ads on the pages they are supposed to be. It saves a ton of time. For the ad index I just export the list from MagForce, put the ads in the property categories and presto.

Just personally, I very rarely buy into lots of these small programs. A lot of times they don't update much, they don't always work well, and then tech support costs more.

The other thing is that we are constantly changing our page maps during the month. We sometimes start off pencil and paper and then make the changes as we go. For someone doing layout, you just need to see where things are and how they're flowing instead of just telling a program what page the ad should be on.

I know a lot of newspapers use flightcheck. in any case doing it yourself and having a flatplan works best at least in my experience in putting in ads for magazines.
