List Rentals

We're about to enter our second year of publication. About 60 days ago our circ manager signed a contract with a list house to market our list. I'm pleased to say we've already had 9 requests! I know there's substantial revenues to be gained in list rental...but not sure of what else we can do to market the list. Should we place the list with more list houses? Any insight given on list rentals would be most appreciated.

Having your circulation list available for rental is a step in the right direction. With the right list manager, you'll find that list rental revenues can become a nice source of additional profit for your publication.

Before entering into a contract, though, it's important to ask the right questions: How long has the list manager been in business? Do they actively market your list or do they simply place listings in directories and wait for orders to (hopefully) come in? What kind of protections do they offer against competitive and repeat / unauthorized mailings? Do they specialize in specific industries? Do they understand YOUR business as well as theirs (for example, are they renting lists to a prospect who would probably be spending more money with you on an ad campaign)? Do they attend the trade shows you attend? Do they know your industry?

Most list management contracts are exclusive. In other words, your contract most likely does not allow you have other list houses marketing your list.
