WE ARE STARTING A MAGAZINE - ARE YOU SAM?

Hey, everyone, who's life?

My name is Lawrence, I go by LENZ 1, and I'm in the process of starting a Holy Hip Hop Entertainment & Lifestyle magazine serving the Jacksonville Fl area.

I have no experience with creating a magazine from start to finish, however, God gave me the vision, and I have this buren on my heart to see it through. My area of "expertise" is photography and graphic design, so I have that down, but I hope to learn how to handle everything that needs to be done.

So far, I've been around reading advice from others, and have learned a lot, but if anyone thinks that they have any specific advice for me, I'm all ears.

Hey Lenz,

Having graphics and photography skills is definitely a plus. I recommend finding people that would be willing to be partners with you on it. Maybe find someone who knows finanace/accounting. Also you will need sales people to sell ads.

I'm guessing it is going to be free right?

I suggest collecting magazines around your area and find out what they are doing. It doesn't matter what they are. You are looking for number of copies distributed, number of pages, advertising prices, and subscription prices. Even if you distribute free through out Jacksonville you have a magazine that could be national so you should still offer subscriptions.

next get qoutes on printing the magazine. Rember it will most likely be in 16 page increments. Possibly 8 page increments. So you will most likely be doing 32 pages, 48 pages etc. Get qoutes for different page amounts and different number of copies. Like 16 pages, 32 pages, and 48 pages at 2,000 copies, 5,000, and 10,000 copies. This will give you an idea of the best combination price wise. Then determine how much you can charge for advertsing based on what you need to make and what the market is.

Figure out what your advertising market is. Probably detail shops for cars, musicians, motorcycle shops, and stuff like that. Anything that is big in hip hop culture. Determine whether these people will advertise because it's easy to think they will but they probably won.t. Example is we run a green living magazine and I thought all these organic and green companies would advertise. Problem is most don't believe in traditional advertising and think that they have smart consumers that will find it on their own. It makes it much more difficult.

You will also need a proto type to shop advertisers so I would do 1,000 to 2,000 copies on your first run to show advertisers and to find out if people like it.

Good luck.
