What is your Mag going to be about? I would go with Adobe package, its a bit spendy but its great and seems to be the most widely used - as well as super versatile - makes it nice when working on files with different people. chat with ya soon

Hi Gary,

If you are planning to have it professionally printed then I would recommend using either Adobe InDesign or Quark as most printers won't touch things designed in word or publisher.

What is your magazine about? Do you know who your readers will be yet? And how often do you plan to publish it, monthly, quarterly?

It can be difficult knowing where to start - we got a range of printing prices then worked out what we needed (wanted) as an advertising income to decide on our ad rates (comparing them with similar mags helped too). Then on a practical level we created a sample issue and a media pack, set a launch date and went out and sold the advert space...

It was a bit easier for us because I've worked in design for a long time so I already had all the software needed to do that in-house.

When you're looking at your finances I would suggest getting a price from someone to do the page layout, you might find that the printer you go can do that for you as quite a few have in-house design teams - a well designed mag can really help sell the advertising!
