What I Learnt from SAM

Just want to introduce myself further and give anyone my tips about SAM. Around June 2008, I printed my first ever magazine. It was not a large scale operation by any means - I made less than 100 copies. However, I used my blog to send it all over the world. Readers of my blog from the Caribbean, Denmark & the USA requested free copies - because that was what it was.I am sure the magazine got me into journalism school which is where I am doing my postgraduate publishing MA now. Here are just…See More

This is looking dangerously like promo-spam. Beware, children!

I think you are 'done' starting a magazine when you have already printed it. 5 issues for bi-annual magazine looks to me like you have already entered the realm!

I love magazines. I made my first magazine in 2008. It was called Kerosene. So far only one issue and probably only one issue to be had but it made me fall in love with publishing.

I used to comment on this forum back when it looked like a message board but it was always dead so I packed up and left. I'm back now though!

"Make sure your demographic that you are targeting want to read your content online." Good advice and my demographic is black men and I'm putting my best effort into making sure that the black mens' magazine I'm working on will be read. The sticking point I'm at now is finding a web designer that doesn't want 5 figures for a decent job. Any suggestions there?

It's going to be an online lifestyle magazine(for now) which will focus on how every subject relates to black men from politics to sports to religion and everything else. I want to slowly branch out and relate to every black men in every corner of the world, but first, the magazine will deal with American black men.

No, I'm not from a publishing background. I just love writing and teaching and I have a deep connection with my demographic. You make a good point about segmentation which I will keep in mind and hopefully international versions of my magazine will be possible in the future. When you say niche magazines vs. general content magazines, you're referring to a black mens' finance or fashion magazine as opposed to a black mens' version of Esquire or Essence?
